STANFORD, Calif. - Second-seeded Rachel Atawo and Abigail Spears advanced to the doubles final of the 2016 Bank of the West Classic Saturday night, defeating Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke 6-3, 7-6 at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Atawo and Spears dominated the first set, winning two break points en route to a 6-3 win. Groenefeld and Peschke, the doubles draw`s fourth seed, took the upper hand to start the second set, taking a 5-2 lead. Atawo and Spears battled back to earn a break point, eventually winning the match with a 10-8 tiebreak.
Third-seeded Darija Jurak and Anastasia Rodionova also advanced to the doubles final, beating Johanna Konta and Maria Sanchez in straight sets. Jurak and Rodionova won a break point in the first game of the match, the only break in the first set en route to a 6-4 win. Konta and Sanchez surrendered three break points in the second, dropping the set 6-2.
The doubles final will be held Sunday afternoon at Taube Family Tennis Stadium immediately following the conclusion of the singles final at 2 p.m.
The Bank of the West Classic, a Premier WTA event, features a 28-player singles draw as well as a 16-team doubles draw. The event is owned and operated by IMG and serves as the opening women's event of the Emirates Airline US Open Series.
The list of past champions of the event reads like a Who's Who of women's tennis including Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Andrea Jaeger, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters.
