STANFORD, Calif. (www.mubadalasvc.com) – Xu Yi-Fan and Zheng Saisai knocked off the second-seeded duo of Anabel Medina Garrigues and Arantxa Parra Santonja 6-1, 6-3 on Sunday afternoon in the doubles final of the Bank of the West Classic.
After requiring super-tiebreakers to win their first two matches, Xu and Zheng won their final two contests in straight sets while surrendering only 10 games combined during that stretch.
Contesting their second final as a team, Xu and Zheng are the first Chinese pair to capture the Bank of the West Classic hardware.
The first unseeded duo to win at Stanford since Marina Erakovic and Heather Watson in 2012, Xu and Zheng both also claimed their second tour-level doubles title.
After cruising to a 6-1 victory in the first set, Xu and Zheng also led 3-2 in the second set before the Spanish duo of Medina Garrigues and Parra Santonja evened it at 3-3. However, Xu and Zheng quickly won the final three games, holding serve twice.
