Venus Williams to Face Johanna Konta for Title

STANFORD, Calif. - No. 1 seed Venus Williams advanced to the finals of the 2016 Bank of the West Classic, defeating Alison Riske 6-1, 7-6 on Saturday night at Taube Family Tennis Stadium. 

Williams started strongly, winning two early break points against fellow American Riske and taking the first set 6-1. Riske battled back in the second forcing Williams into a tiebreak. Williams went on to win 7-2 in the second set tiebreak, closing out the match 6-1, 7-6. 

Williams’ opponent will be Johanna Konta, who beat No. 2 seed Dominika Cibulkova 6-4, 6-2 in the day`s first semifinal. Konta, the main draw`s No. 3 seed, won an early break against Cibulkova, holding serve to win the first set. Konta raced out to a 3-1 lead in the second, adding one more break point to finish the match in straight sets.

The singles final will take place at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The doubles final will be held immediately following singles action. 

The Bank of the West Classic, a Premier WTA event, features a 28-player singles draw as well as a 16-team doubles draw. The event is owned and operated by IMG and serves as the opening women's event of the Emirates Airline US Open Series.
 
The list of past champions of the event reads like a Who's Who of women's tennis including Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Andrea Jaeger, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters.
