11 Entries Heading to Olympics

SAN JOSÉ, CA (July 6, 2021) – The Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic will be well represented at the upcoming Olympic games in Tokyo, as 11 entries have been named to their respective national teams including Alison Riske (USA), Elise Mertens (BEL), Elena Rybakina (KAZ), Yulia Putintseva (KAZ), Jelena Ostapenko (LAT), Magda Linette (POL), Veronika Kudermetova (RUS), Daria Kasatkina (RUS), Ekaterina Alexandrova (RUS), Paula Badosa (ESP), and Dayana Yastremska (UKR). 

Two other entries, Sofia Kenin and Madison Keys, had also qualified for the US team but chose not to play.

“It is exciting to see so many of our entries named to their nation’s Olympic teams,” said Vickie Gunnarsson, Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic Tournament Director. “With this being our 50th Anniversary, it is wonderful to see how the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic has grown into a truly international event.”

Fans in the Bay Area will have the opportunity to see one of the deepest and most competitive player fields of the summer schedule. In addition to the 11 Olympians, the tournament field includes 17 players that won at least one WTA singles title and 15 who have advanced to a Grand Slam quarterfinal or better.  Overall, the 2021 field has combined to win 47 career singles titles including Grand Slam winners Kenin, Ostapenko and Sloane Stephens.

Co-founded by the legendary sportswoman, visionary, and activist Billie Jean King, the tournament was the first event of the historic 1971 women's professional tennis tour, a precursor to the WTA. Its list of past champions reads like a who's who of women's tennis, including Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Andrea Jaeger, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Venus Williams, and Kim Clijsters.

Owned and operated by IMG, the tournament features a 28-player singles draw and 16-team doubles draw and serves as the opening women's event of the US Open Series.
