Highlighting this year's player field will be World No. 1, two-time Bank of the West Classic champion and 17-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, 2012 Wimbledon finalist and World No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska and defending Bank of the West Classic champion Dominika Cibulkova. Also competing in this year's Bank of the West Classic will be World No. 6 and 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova along with ninth-ranked Angelique Kerber, the up and coming star out of Germany.
On top of featuring five of the Top 10, the premier WTA event will display 11 of the Top 20, including No. 11 Ana Ivanovic, No. 14 Sara Errani, No. 15 Carla Suarez-Navarro, No. 17 Samantha Stosur, No. 19 Sabine Lisicki and No. 20 Andrea Petkovic, one of this year’s French Open semifinalists. Carla Suarez-Navarro, who captured her first WTA title this year at Oeiras, finished her first Top-20 season last year and Sam Stosur, the 2011 US Open champion, returns to Stanford for the eighth time in her career as she looks to claim her 6th WTA title and first-ever Bank of the West Classic trophy. Lisicki revisits Stanford for the third time in her career after falling to Serena Williams in the 2011 semifinals and Petkovic makes her first Bank of the West Classic appearance following a stellar performance at Roland Garros where she fell to Simona Halep in the semifinals.
Tickets for this year’s event, which will be held July 28 – August 3 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium on the campus of Stanford University, can be purchased online at www.mubadalasvc.com or by phone at 866-WTA-TIXS (866-982-8497).
Cibulkova, last year's Bank of the West Classic champion, will look to defend her 2013 title and build on her young and impressive career. As a 4-time champion and 7-time finalist, which includes an Australian Open finals appearance earlier this year, the 25-year-old Slovakian is undoubtedly one of the premier players in women's tennis and a fierce competitor to keep an eye on.
Also returning to the Bay Area will be two-time Bank of the West Classic champion Serena Williams. World No. 1 Williams is sure to bring excitement to this year's tournament as she looks to reach her third Bank of the West Classic final in the last four years. Indisputedly one of the greatest women to ever play the game of tennis, Williams will be looking to capture her 61st WTA title and continue to climb the mountain of tennis’ all-time greats.
Other names to look out for at this year's tournament are Garbine Muguruza, Daniela Hantuchova and the young, rising star Caroline Garcia. Muguruza bursted onto the scene this year after capturing her first WTA title at Hobart and then upsetting World No. 1 and two-time Bank of the West Classic champion Serena Williams in the second round of the French Open, her first victory over a top-eight opponent. Hantuchova is a former Top 5 player and has six WTA titles under her belt, including two at Indian Wells (2002, 2007), and the 20-year-old Garcia is an exciting up and coming star who is skyrocketing up the leaderboards after capturing her first WTA title at Bogota in April and breaking the Top 50 in May.
