2016 Singles Draw Announced

STANFORD, Calif. - The 2016 Bank of the West Classic singles draw was announced Friday evening at the Stanford Shopping Center, with top seeds Venus Williams, Dominika Cibulkova, Johanna Kanta and CoCo Vandeweghe securing first-round byes. 

Former World No. 1 Williams, a two-time winner of the Bank of the West Classic, headlines a quarter of the bracket and will play the winner of Kristyna Pliskova and Magda Linette in round two on Wednesday, July 20 at 7 pm. Local favorite CiCi Bellis will face six-seeded Jelena Ostapenko, while two of the four weekend qualifiers will square off. 

In Vandeweghe’s quarter of the bracket, former Stanford standouts Nicole Gibbs and Carol Zhao play each other in a matchup of former Cardinal number ones, with the winner to play Vandeweghe. Eighth-seeded Vavara Lepchenko rounds out the second quarter of the draw with a first-round matchup against Alison Riske. 

Third-seeded Johanna Konta’s quarter of the draw includes wildcards Maria Mateas and Julia Boserup, with seventh-seeded Alize Cornet set to face Jennifer Brady in round one. 

Second-seeded Dominika Cibulkova’s quarter features fifth-seeded Misaka Doi, who plays Xinyun Han in round one. Cibulkova will play the winner of Anna Tatishvili and Kateryna Bondarenko in round two. 

The Bank of the West Classic, a Premier WTA event, features a 28-player singles draw as well as a 16-team doubles draw. The event is owned and operated by IMG and serves as the opening women's event of the Emirates Airline US Open Series.
 
The list of past champions of the event reads like a Who's Who of women's tennis including Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Andrea Jaeger, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters.
