SAN JOSÉ, CA (March 6, 2019) – The Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic will welcome back some of the world’s leading women’s tennis stars as two-time Grand Slam champion Garbiñe Muguruza, two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka and young American Amanda Anisimova have announced they will play in the 2019 event, July 29-August 4, on the campus of San José State University.

Mubadala Investment Company's involvement in the Classic reinforces the company’s commitment to tennis and the Bay Area. Through this partnership, Mubadala has also expanded its long-standing support of tennis, which includes title sponsorship of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, an invitational event held in Abu Dhabi in late December, and the Rio Open, an ATP 500 event held in Brazil each February.

Entering its second year in San José, the heart of Silicon Valley, the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic is a weeklong WTA tennis event that combines the worlds of tennis and technology together in a festival of sports and entertainment.

Featuring a 28-player singles draw as well as a 16-team doubles draw the tournament brings the best female tennis players in the world to the Bay Area. Owned and operated by IMG, the tournament also serves as the opening women's event of the US Open Series.

Muguruza has captured six career WTA singles titles including the French Open in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2017. In September 2017, she ascended to the World No. 1 ranking joining Arantxa Sanchez Vicario as the only Spanish women to reach to top spot.

Azarenka, the 2012 and 2013 Australian Open champion, will be making her sixth appearance at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic. She won the singles title in 2010 and a doubles title (with Maria Kirilenko) in 2011. The two-time Grand Slam champion has won 20 career WTA singles titles and ascended to the World No. 1 ranking in 2012.

At just 17-years-old Anisimova is one of the sports brightest young stars. In January, she reached the fourth round of the Australian Open knocking off the 24th-seed Lesia Tsurenko and the 11th-seed Aryna Sabalenko during her run. In 2017, she captured the US Open Girls singles title and in 2018 ended the year as the youngest player ranked among the top-100 in the world.

Co-founded by the legendary sportswoman, visionary, and activist Billie Jean King, the tournament was first played in 1971 and is the longest-running women-only professional tennis event in the world. Its list of past champions reads like a who's who of women's tennis including Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Andrea Jaeger, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters.
